Start with nights, not the map
The practical question is not whether Gallura and Alghero can appear in one itinerary; they can, but they occupy different parts of northern Sardinia. Decide how many nights you genuinely want in the west and how many on the north-east coast. A map pin does not show the cost of packing, checking out, travelling, checking in again or adjusting your day around arrival times. If Alghero is a major reason for the trip, reserving one or more nights there can turn a transfer into time on the ground.
Before choosing, write down the order of your nights and where you want to wake each day. If the plan gives the west only one day, ask whether the round trip from an eastern base is worth it. If you want to experience Alghero without rushing, compare two stays and check that the move does not break up an already short holiday.
Estimate the transfer for your actual plan
Do not treat a travel time found for another day as a promise. Traffic, route, stops, departure time and transport mode all affect the experience. Put the real addresses into a map, check the route for your dates and likely travel window, then add time for leaving, parking and reaching the place you plan to visit. Without a car, check connections separately: Alghero Airport publishes bus options for that airport, but this does not establish a simple or direct connection to your Gallura accommodation.
Compare door to door, not just the distance between town centres. A real itinerary may include luggage, check-in and waiting; write those beside the transfer. This makes it easier to see whether a day visit fits your preferred pace or whether a night in the west would give you useful breathing room.
Give Alghero a clear role
Make the comparison concrete by deciding what you want to do in the west and how much of the day it needs. A walk and dinner take a different shape from a day with several stops; you do not need to fill every hour to justify the journey. If a particular visit is the reason for going, check opening, access and official arrangements with its operator in advance. Keep an alternative in mind instead of assuming every activity is available or that hours and conditions remain the same in every season.
If Alghero is only one name on a long list, consider whether it matters more than a relaxed day near your chosen base. Dropping a distant stop can give the holiday continuity and reduce logistics. The right choice depends on your group’s priorities, not a universal ranking of destinations.
Compare both options on equal terms
For two bases, account for actual nights, the price and terms of both stays, check-in and check-out windows, luggage storage and transfer arrangements. For a long day out, account for fuel or public transport, breaks, fatigue and the hours left in Alghero. Request comparable quotes and read the official change and cancellation terms; do not assume that hosts or booking platforms use the same rules.
Our homes are in Arzachena and Pantogia near Porto Cervo: they are not in Alghero, on an island or automatically within walking distance of beaches. If you choose one for the Gallura part, check the exact address and how it fits the places on your plan. The municipality’s accommodation listing describes the wider area, not a guarantee that any one home suits every itinerary.
Use a simple decision test
Sketch two versions: a round trip in one day and a version with a night in the west. For each, count mornings in the area you want, accommodation changes and hours genuinely spent visiting. If the first version leaves most of the day in a vehicle or waiting, the second deserves a closer look; if another base consumes too much of a short stay, focus on Gallura. Book only after checking connections and terms for your actual dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is Alghero close enough to Gallura for an easy day trip?
They are separate areas, and distance alone does not make the trip easy. Check the door-to-door route, transport, date, stops and activities; do not rely on a generic duration as a guarantee.
Is booking two places always better?
No. A second base makes sense when you want meaningful time in the west and the move fits the nights available. For a short visit, compare a day transfer against your group’s priorities and pace.
