Two different holidays, not two lists of stops
A Sardinia loop and a Gallura stay can include some of the same visits, but they call for different rhythms. On a road trip, a day often includes a transfer and a new accommodation; from one base, you return to the same place and choose a radius for outings. The question is not how many names fit on the plan, but how much time you want to spend travelling, packing or getting settled somewhere new.
Write down the days actually available, not only the nights booked. Treat arrival and departure as partial days until you have checked real schedules. Then assign each day to an area. This simple timeline quickly shows when an ambitious list demands more movement than you want.
Draw the trip as a sequence
For a tour, put the areas you want to see in order and ask whether each transition has a clear purpose. An intermediate stop may justify changing accommodation if it gives you time to visit, rather than serving only as a break in the drive. Check real addresses, routes and connections for your dates; do not assign a fixed duration based on a route found elsewhere. Include luggage, check-in and check-out windows and possible breaks.
For a Gallura base, choose a few recurring priorities and consider how often you want to return to the starting point. The municipality describes Arzachena as a territory spanning an inland centre and coastal localities, so planning by area is more useful than treating Gallura as one point. A base cuts accommodation changes, but it does not make every place nearby.
Think through arrival and departure
Your arrival gateway can shape the sequence, but it does not decide the itinerary by itself. Olbia Airport is a gateway for Gallura; Cagliari is in the south, so the transfer becomes part of the trip. Check active connections and schedules for your dates because airport pages and networks can change. If you arrive and leave from different airports, compare a linear route with any costs, availability and terms for the vehicle or transport you plan to use.
Do not build the plan around one hypothetical flight combination or a transfer without stops. Leave room for delays and the practical tasks on your first and last days. A table with date, sleeping area and planned transfer helps reveal tight transitions before they become difficult bookings to change.
Give value to days without a transfer
A successful holiday does not need to cover every part of the island. Think about what a day without a move gives you: time for a longer visit, a break, a relaxed meal or a change of plan. If you enjoy varied scenery and changing context, a road trip may suit you even with extra logistics. If you would rather revisit an area or travel with fewer changes, continuity is as valuable as another stop.
Compare options by counting mornings and evenings in each area as well as distance. Do not assume you can make up every lost hour with early departures; consider the pace your group can sustain, especially on days involving luggage and check-in.
Choose a base for the geography you will use
Our homes are in Arzachena and Pantogia near Porto Cervo: specific options for the Gallura part of a trip, not accommodation throughout the island. Arzachena is inland and Pantogia is near Porto Cervo; neither is on an island or guarantees walking access to every beach. Before choosing a base, compare its exact address with your stops, transport and expected days.
If your plan shows many accommodation changes, try removing one and see what you truly lose. If only visits you do not care about remain, return to the tour; if you gain useful time in a preferred area, you may have found a more coherent holiday. Check each property’s and transport provider’s official terms before booking.
Frequently asked questions
How many days does it take to tour all of Sardinia?
There is no one number for everyone. It depends on the areas, stops and time you want at each place. Map overnight stays and check actual transfers before deciding whether the loop is realistic.
Can I use one Gallura home as a base for the whole island?
You can, but distant regions will involve transfers that take time from the holiday. If you want to visit several areas with time on site, compare multiple bases with the days available.
