Three days in Gallura: an itinerary with room for changes

Three days work best as three themes, not a checklist: coast, inland Gallura and the islands. Start by choosing a base and checking where each stop lies in relation to it. Gallura includes distinct localities, and getting between them takes planning; avoid crossing the region from end to end every day. The sequence below is a flexible outline to adapt to conditions and to the schedules actually published for your dates.

Before you set out

Three days work best as three themes, not a checklist: coast, inland Gallura and the islands. Start by choosing a base and checking where each stop lies in relation to it. Gallura includes distinct localities, and getting between them takes planning; avoid crossing the region from end to end every day. The sequence below is a flexible outline to adapt to conditions and to the schedules actually published for your dates.

A coastal day around Cannigione

Give the first day to the Gulf of Arzachena: Cannigione offers the setting of a harbour village, while nearby beaches let you choose between different kinds of stops. Do not set a rigid sequence of beaches; choose one priority and a nearby backup. Arzachena town is inland and can be combined with the coast only if you have time for the journey and actually want to visit it.

Archaeology inland

Reserve the second day for an archaeological area, such as the nuragic complex of La Prisgiona in the Capichera valley. The municipal page describes a complex nuraghe and village, and notes that restoration and excavation continue: do not assume every space is open to visitors. You can pair it with Coddu Vecchiu, but this is a Giants’ Tomb, a separate monument rather than another nuraghe.

Archaeological sites may have seasonal opening times, tickets or visit arrangements. Check the official site before planning the day, and leave time to read the displays and take in the landscape. If the site is closed or a guided visit is unavailable, change plans to a walk in Arzachena town or move the archaeological visit to another date.

A separate day for La Maddalena

Treat the third day as a dedicated outing: the Park describes a ferry link from Palau to the main island. Decide in advance whether to focus on the historic centre and panoramic road or on one coastal area reached by road. Caprera is connected by a bridge, but adding it means extra travel and choices; do not promise an in-depth visit to both islands in one day.

Check ferry schedules, any booking requirements and Park notices for your travel date. Some coves have specific access rules and may require a guide or reservation; a boat trip does not guarantee access to every beach. Keep a backup on the main island if sea conditions change or access is unavailable. If you have a fourth day, you can return to Caprera at a more relaxed pace.

Leave a real buffer

A flexible itinerary does not mean leaving everything until the last minute. It means checking or booking what is necessary without filling every hour. Put activities with fixed schedules on the most suitable day, then leave part of the day open. Use that time for a break, to move a visit because of the weather, or to stay longer somewhere you are enjoying.

This plan helps you choose; it does not promise every attraction will be open or that transfers will take a fixed amount of time. Check official sites before departure and look again for local notices. If travelling with children or anyone who finds walking difficult, reduce the number of stops and check the walking surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Which day is best for La Maddalena?

It depends on sea conditions, ferry schedules and what you want to do. Check departures and Park notices for your specific date, and treat the outing as a full day.

Are La Prisgiona and Coddu Vecchiu both nuraghi?

No. La Prisgiona is a nuragic complex. Coddu Vecchiu is a Bronze Age Giants’ Tomb; they are different kinds of archaeological monument.
