One week in Gallura: seven different days from one holiday base

A week does not require seven ambitious excursions. Choose one place to stay and group activities by area, so you spend more time on what interests you and less travelling. Arzachena is inland; Porto Cervo is on the coast. These bases have different strengths, so compare the map with the places you actually want to visit before deciding.

Before you go

The plan below is a set of possible days, not a timetable with guaranteed arrival times. Before each outing, check opening, parking, ferries and access through official sources. If weather or sea conditions change, swap days or choose an alternative in the same area. A week with pauses is easier to enjoy than a string of stops where one delay disrupts everything else.

Day 1: get your bearings

Use arrival day to buy essentials, understand nearby connections and explore the town or locality where you are staying. If there is time, choose a nearby walk or beach stop rather than a distant trip. This also lets you check local traffic, signs and services, which can vary by season and day of the week.

Days 2 and 3: coast and archaeology

Set aside one day for the coast and choose a main beach with a nearby alternative. Another day can focus on the Capichera valley: La Prisgiona is a nuragic complex, while Coddu Vecchiu is a Giants’ Tomb. Check which areas are open and the current entry arrangements; do not assume every archaeological space is accessible.

Day 4: one island, not all of them

La Maddalena deserves its own day, starting with the ferry connection from Palau. Choose a realistic goal: the historic centre and panoramic road, or one coastal area accessible under current Park rules. Caprera is linked by a bridge but adds more travel. Keep coves with special rules out of your plan unless you have checked reservations, guide requirements and permitted access.

Days 5 and 6: catch up or change the scene

Use one day as a buffer: revisit a beach you enjoyed, move an outing postponed because of weather or simply slow down. For a different setting, consider an inland village such as San Pantaleo, after checking the market and event calendar with the municipality. Do not build the day around old bus times; check the service for your specific date.

The other day can remain open for a second visit to an archaeological area or a short walk. During a week, it helps not to book every day: regulated access may have limited availability and sea conditions can change plans. If travelling without a car, plan around actual services to one locality per day and leave time for the return journey.

Day 7: finish without rushing

Choose a stop close to your base on the final day, or take a walk and leave time to prepare for departure. Do not add a distant outing before a checkout or transfer time. If the week has already included coast, archaeology and islands, returning to a favourite place is a sensible choice: every day does not need a new destination.

Before leaving, recheck schedules and notices for visits that require access arrangements or reservations. Do not apply one locality’s transport schedule to all of Gallura. A good plan gives you realistic alternatives and time to rest, keeping a single base only when travel remains manageable for the places you want to see.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit La Maddalena and Caprera on the same day?

You can reach Caprera over the bridge, but seeing both islands at a relaxed pace takes careful choices. Account for the ferry, sea conditions, Park rules and your priorities; focusing on one island may be better.

What should I book ahead?

Check current requirements for guided visits, regulated access, ferries and ticketed attractions. Requirements, availability and schedules change, so confirm with the operator or municipality for your dates.
