Use your real arrival time, not just the date

A booking from Monday to Friday may not cost the same if you collect the car in the morning or evening, or return it at a different time. Enter the time you can realistically reach the desk, allowing for landing, baggage and the walk or transfer to the collection area. Do not select an optimistic time just to lower the quote: a delayed flight or transfer could bring you outside the agreed pickup window.

Run the same check for the return. If you have a flight, the trip to the terminal and airport procedures need their own allowance; the time entered in the rental is the planned vehicle return time, not your departure time. Do not assume a universal 24-hour rule

Before paying, review the quote and full conditions: look for the counted duration, how partial days are treated, any grace period, and the consequences of returning after the stated time.

When a booking site shows a total before confirmation, keep a copy of the quote and the conditions you reviewed. If a point is unclear, ask the provider for a written answer tied to your reservation, including the pickup and return times and locations. A general answer about a desk or service does not replace the terms attached to the rate you selected.

Compare genuinely like-for-like quotes

Open two offers and keep vehicle class, dates, times, location, drivers and options consistent. That is the only useful way to tell whether a difference comes from the rate or from a different rental duration. Also check the deposit, accepted card, fuel policy, cover and charges excluded from the headline price. A quote for airport pickup and one from a different location are not automatically comparable: reaching the collection point and getting back to the terminal are part of your plan.

If the booking form rounds the times, check the duration shown before payment. Do not count on a free extension, changed pickup time or later adjustment unless the provider confirms it. The European Union advises customers to read rental conditions and check the offer terms. For your reservation, the agreement and confirmation actually issued are the documents to follow.

What if your flight is delayed or changes?

Before booking, find the procedure for reporting a delay and check whether you should provide your flight number. Ask how late the desk will wait, whether after-hours pickup is possible and what conditions or charges apply. Do not assume an airport rental desk follows the terminal’s opening hours or your flight schedule. If your flight changes before departure, contact the provider and update the reservation under its rules; a change is not automatic.

For returns, locate the exact drop-off point and check how evening or after-hours returns work, including key handover and vehicle inspection. If your onward journey has a tight connection, leave a margin that fits both the rental company’s and airport’s instructions. The aim is to avoid the car remaining formally under your responsibility after you have moved on to another part of the trip.
