Taking a hire car to La Maddalena: ask first, plan afterwards

Do not assume a rental car may be taken across the water: ask the provider whether your specific booking allows the crossing and get any conditions confirmed in writing. Only then compare the vehicle ticket with the practical value of driving on the island. National Park rules still apply to every visit.

Get the rental company’s approval first

The fact that a ferry carries cars does not mean your rental agreement allows you to board one. Before buying a vehicle ticket, read your booking terms and ask the rental company whether the Palau–La Maddalena crossing is permitted for that vehicle and those dates. Ask whether prior notice or specific approval is needed, and how assistance, cover and responsibility work during transport. Do not rely on a generic phone answer: keep written confirmation linked to your booking. The EU’s Your Europe guide advises checking rental terms and responsibilities with the actual provider. If approval is not clear, resolve that question before making the rest of the plan depend on the car.

Compare the full cost of taking the vehicle

If the rental company permits the trip, check the ferry operator’s current vehicle ticket and conditions as well as the passenger arrangements. Ferries on the Palau–La Maddalena route carry vehicles, but schedules, ticket options and terms should be checked with the operator for your travel date. Consider the vehicle fare and any driving you expect to do on the island; do not treat a price found online as valid for every date or vehicle category. Compare that total with leaving the car in Palau and choosing an excursion or another way to get around, based on your actual plans.

Ask whether the car will earn its place

The decision depends on your day, not on the assumption that a car always means more freedom. If you mainly want to see the town centre or join an organised excursion, you may not use the vehicle enough to justify taking it across. Check departure points, planned local transport and your return before deciding. If you want to explore several places independently, consider distances, parking, permitted access and environmental restrictions, as well as whether driving is allowed. A car changes logistics; it does not provide access to beaches or protected areas that are closed. Compare a specific plan with and without the vehicle instead of imagining an ideal day with no constraints.

The National Park’s rules still apply

Taking a car to the island does not change the rules of the National Park Authority. Access to the Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina paths on Caprera is regulated: consult the Authority’s current guidance and arrange a visit through the required procedure and authorised guides. Nibani, Soffi and Mortorio are integral protection zones; do not plan landings, swimming or independent itineraries there. Before setting off for any beach or trail, check current closures and restrictions. A road that can be reached by car is not the same as permission to enter. Do not improvise a route from a map or an old travel post; official park rules take priority.

Make the decision with four checks

Keep four answers together before confirming: written permission from the rental company, the ferry operator’s vehicle conditions, the car’s real usefulness for places you may visit, and current Park rules for each outing. If the first requirement is missing, do not board the car. If the vehicle is allowed but adds no value to your plans, taking it over may create cost and complexity without a practical benefit. If your itinerary depends on a regulated place, verify access first; do not build the day around an area that is closed or prohibited. The homes featured here are in Arzachena and Pantogia near Porto Cervo; visiting the archipelago is a separate excursion to arrange.

FAQ: rental terms and access

Keep the booking terms and the ferry information you checked for your dates together. Environmental and operational rules may need a fresh check; an old guide is not an access permit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I automatically take a rental car on the ferry?

No. First confirm that the terms of your specific booking permit the crossing and clarify any conditions with the rental company. The ferry operator and rental provider are separate parties.

Does having a car let me reach every beach?

No. Park rules and local closures still apply. Nibani, Soffi and Mortorio are integral protection zones, while access to Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina is regulated.
