Deposit and excess in Olbia car hire: two different items to understand

A deposit is money a rental company may hold or pre-authorise as security; an excess is a possible share of liability in certain circumstances. They are different items with different budget effects, so read the offer and ask about your exact vehicle, dates and card.

A deposit affects available funds

At collection, a supplier may require security through a pre-authorisation or another method set out in its terms. This is not the rental price: it may temporarily reduce the available balance on your card even if it is not posted as a final charge. The method, amount and release process depend on the supplier, vehicle category and offer; do not use a figure quoted for a different car as your estimate.

Ask which cards are accepted, whose name must be on the card and what available balance is needed. Also ask when and how the security is released, bearing in mind that later posting can depend on the card issuer. Distinguish a charge from an authorisation and a later release: the headline quote may not explain every practical effect.

An excess describes a different exposure

An excess is a possible amount left for the customer to bear in a damage or other event covered by the terms. It is not the deposit, and it does not automatically mean that amount will be charged when you collect the car. The agreement and selected protection define events, exclusions, procedures and required documents; words such as «cover» or «protection» do not settle every situation.

Read what is included, which events are excluded, whether the excess differs by vehicle part, and what steps are required after an accident or damage. The EU’s rental guidance encourages customers to compare terms and responsibilities carefully. If a clause is unclear, ask the supplier to explain it in writing; do not rely on generic insurance advice to decide what applies.

Compare price and card requirements separately

For each offer, record the total price, deposit, stated excess, included options, exclusions, accepted cards and cancellation terms in separate columns. The deposit mainly concerns funds that must be available; the excess describes a possible liability. Adding both as certain costs makes the comparison misleading, while ignoring both may hide important restrictions.

Several suppliers operate in Olbia, but each booking has its own contract. Ask for a summary tied to your dates, vehicle category, drivers and booking channel. If you booked through an intermediary, also confirm which company handles collection and which documents take precedence if its voucher differs from the rental supplier’s terms.

Ask before you confirm

Before paying, ask how much will be held and on which card; whether the deposit changes by category; when release is initiated; what excess applies and which cases are excluded; and what evidence or notifications are required after damage. Keep the current terms and reply, and inspect the vehicle at collection using the supplier’s stated process.

These checks help you choose an offer that fits your budget without promising a refund or universal cover. If you cannot get a clear answer, include that uncertainty in your comparison and consider whether another offer is easier to assess. Policies can change, so recheck the final documents before departure.

FAQ

A deposit and an excess can both appear in one booking, but they serve different purposes and should be checked in separate parts of the terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is the deposit the maximum I could pay for damage?

Not necessarily. A deposit is financial security; the excess and other responsibilities depend on the applicable terms and protection for the event.

When is a deposit returned or released?

The process depends on the rental supplier and card issuer. Ask the supplier when it initiates release and check the terms attached to your booking.
