Ask where the tour actually starts
A description saying ‘from Porto Cervo’ or ‘in the Arzachena area’ does not necessarily mean a stop near your accommodation. Ask for the exact meeting address, whether it is a harbour, quay, car park or office, and how early you need to arrive. Request a precise map point and current instructions, then compare it with your home address. The distance must be checked for that specific excursion.
Do not confuse the advertised destination with the boarding point or activity start. In a spread-out area, the day may require a separate trip before the tour. If it leaves from a harbour, clarify whether the price covers only the activity or also ground transport. Neither of our homes automatically includes pickup; the provider must confirm that service explicitly.
Confirm transfers and timing
Ask whether a transfer is included, optional or sold separately. If included, confirm the pickup place and window, what happens after a delay and whom to contact on the day. If a third party operates the transfer, find out who handles the booking and how changes are communicated. Keep the confirmation and details offline, especially when the activity has a fixed departure.
Plan the trip back to the home as well as the outward route to the meeting point. If you need to reach a harbour early or return after the last useful connection, check concrete options for your dates; do not assume a taxi or bus will be available. An unplanned return can make an organised excursion a day that still requires a car.
Check that the excursion fits
Read what the activity includes, what to bring, any luggage or child restrictions, and the rules for weather, cancellation and changes. For trips in the La Maddalena Archipelago, check the Park’s official rules and the operator’s current conditions: some access is regulated, and not every island or cove is freely visitable. Do not plan a landing or route just because it appears in an old commercial description.
Ask about guide language, group format and any relevant mobility or health needs rather than assuming every service suits everyone. If the answer changes your plan, get confirmation before paying. Treat the activity and transport as separate services: a boat trip may cover part of a visit but will not automatically solve shopping, dinner or other outings.
Recalculate whether you need a car
Put confirmed excursions in your calendar and mark the days that remain uncovered. For each tour, remove only the journeys a provider has actually confirmed; compare car-hire quotes, a dedicated transfer and current public transport for the rest. Include collection, return and rental costs, along with rides for activities that are not organised. Do not decide a car is unnecessary based on a pickup that is absent from your voucher.
If one or two excursions cover the most complicated days but you want to visit other places on the rest, consider a shorter hire or a mix of services, subject to availability and terms. Request comparable quotes and read cancellation and change rules. Savings are real only when removed journeys and remaining costs are clear. A verifiable itinerary helps avoid paying for an unused car or being left without a return ride.
Frequently asked questions
Will an excursion collect me at my home?
Do not assume pickup. Ask the provider for the meeting point and included service, then get confirmation for your actual address and date.
Does a booked tour mean I do not need a car?
Only for journeys that are actually covered and confirmed. Assess the trip to the meeting point, return and days not covered by the excursion separately.
