Start with the calendar, not the nights

Before choosing a home, note the actual flight or ferry times you are considering, then add the journey to the accommodation and the steps required after landing or disembarking. Do not reuse schedules from an earlier season: routes and frequency can change, so check the official operators for your dates. The result should be a set of usable time windows, not an optimistic count of nights away.

Give each day a realistic role

Sort the stay into full days, partial days and travel days. A half-day may suit one nearby visit, but it may not support a beach, a meal out and another destination as well. Choose one priority for each available window and keep other ideas as alternatives. This prevents an itinerary that depends on perfect connections or services whose opening you have not checked. If you arrive late or leave early, count that day as logistics before assigning it sightseeing.

Being able to reach an activity does not automatically make it practical within a short day.

Build a plan with workable alternatives

Before confirming, sketch the simplest itinerary that would make the weekend worthwhile: one visit for each full day, a nearby option for partial days and a light plan for arrival. Check the operator’s current calendar and conditions for each connection; for a rental car, confirm availability and terms with the provider. Do not treat an old information page as proof that a service will run. When only a few free hours remain, fewer stops and a well-matched base usually make a more useful plan than a long list of places.
