Pedres Castle: know about the closure before planning a visit

Pedres Castle has been closed to the public since 13 August 2025 because of possible structural damage. Do not climb or look for another entrance; plan a town visit instead and check each separate site independently.

Start with the closure notice

Olbia’s municipal notice, published on 13 August 2025, prohibits access to Pedres Castle because of possible structural damage and keeps it closed until safety works are complete. The same page still shows older opening information; that does not grant permission to enter. Do not climb towards the keep, cross barriers or look for a side path. SardegnaTurismo’s description of the historic approach does not override the municipal closure. Check the municipality’s page on the day you plan to visit before reconsidering the site.

What the castle’s history tells you

Pedres stands on a granite outcrop about five kilometres south of Olbia. SardegnaTurismo tentatively dates its construction to the thirteenth century, during the Pisan Visconti period; it later passed to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and the Aragonese before being abandoned. The keep remains more than ten metres high. These details explain the strategic location in the Middle Ages; they are not an invitation to approach the structure. The documented settlement of Villa Pedresa, now gone, stood downhill in the fourteenth century and has a history separate from the castle walls.

Alternatives in Olbia town

For a historical stop accessible from the urban area, San Simplicio Basilica is a real alternative. It is built in granite, and the municipal page describes construction phases between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, as well as Roman milestones in the surrounding square. Check the day’s visiting arrangements and opening times because it remains a place of worship. Su Monte ’e s’Ape is another distinct archaeological site, but verify its access and route separately. Olbia’s Archaeological Museum is closed to the public for flooring works: leave it out until the municipality announces reopening.

How to change the day plan

If you chose Pedres for a view from above, do not try to reach the rock or linger in restricted areas to recreate the panorama. You could spend the day at San Simplicio and in the historic centre, or select a separate archaeological site with confirmed access. Check each alternative’s own notice: Pedres’s closure says nothing about the status of other places, and their appearance on the same municipal page does not confirm that they are open. Keep the castle off the route until the prohibition is officially lifted.

Frequently asked questions

Can visitors enter Pedres Castle?

No. The municipal notice prohibits access because of possible structural damage. Older opening lines do not override it; check for a new official notice before planning a visit.

Is Su Monte ’e s’Ape included in the closure?

It is a separate archaeological site. The castle notice neither confirms nor rules out access to the tomb; check its own access conditions and route with the municipality.
