Gallura with your dog: plan a holiday without surprises

For a holiday with a dog, first check the ordinance in force on your travel date, then choose officially designated dog beaches and confirm each location’s access, facilities and rules.

An online list does not replace the ordinance

Hello Olbia’s page for travelling with animals lists some dog beaches and points to a 2021 regional ordinance. That dated reference is exactly why you should check the rules and municipal guidance for your travel year.

Confirm permitted animals, time windows, leash or muzzle requirements, animal limits, documentation and boundaries. Rules may distinguish a general beach from a dedicated area. Do not assume a beach that allowed dogs last year still does.

Choose a place for your dog and logistics

The Municipality of Arzachena lists Poltu Liccia, La Sciumara and Lu Postu for dogs. Their listings describe practical differences: Poltu Liccia is a group of small coves without facilities and no nearby bus stop; La Sciumara is in Cannigione.

Lu Postu is also listed as a municipal dog beach, with a wetland behind it and no facilities. Confirm current access and boundaries, parking and shade before leaving; the three choices may not suit an older dog or one sensitive to heat equally.

Plan water, breaks and transport

Bring fresh water, a bowl, portable shade where permitted and a plan for returning to the car without overheating the animal. Follow veterinary advice for your own dog, and never leave it in a parked vehicle.

Check whether your chosen beach has a practical road approach and whether the dog can accompany you for the whole outing. Ask transit operators about current animal policies rather than relying on a route mentioned in an old page.

Accommodation and beaches have separate rules

A dog beach does not mean your accommodation accepts pets. Before booking, ask the host about conditions, limits and suitable spaces; do not infer pet permission from property pages that do not state a policy.

Keep a veterinarian contact and your dog’s records available, and respect other beach users and wetland wildlife. If the rules are unclear, choose a shaded walk away from the beach until you have confirmation.

Packing your own essentials avoids depending on facilities that the listings do not show: drinking water, waste bags, a bowl, a suitable lead and permitted shade. Choose the time around heat and your dog’s needs; ask a vet whether your animal is comfortable with hot sand, walking and swimming. Do not leave it tied up or unattended, and prevent it from disturbing wetland wildlife. For the journey, check in advance whether buses and places you plan to visit accept dogs. The beach listings do not promise access along the whole coast or permission at a holiday home; ask whoever manages each place.

Make the first outing shorter than you think you need, especially in warm weather, and observe how the dog handles sand, noise and nearby animals. Keep the leash control consistent with the current local rules, collect waste and give wildlife plenty of distance. If access is unclear or the designated area is crowded, leave and choose another permitted place rather than settling outside its boundaries. Confirm pet acceptance at accommodation separately, ideally in writing, so a dog-beach listing does not create a problem at check-in.
