Ferry home from Gallura: choose accommodation with checkout in mind

Plan the return day around both the ferry and your accommodation: confirm the actual port, the operator’s instructions, checkout time, route and luggage arrangements. Resolve these constraints before booking to avoid a fragile plan.

Start with the port on your ticket

Olbia and Golfo Aranci are different ports, so build your return plan from the port shown in your booking, not a name mentioned in a general guide. Open the operator’s confirmation and note the address or terminal, the required check-in time and current instructions for passengers and vehicles. Do not treat the sailing departure time as the time you should leave your accommodation.

Then map the route from the accommodation’s exact address to the port, using the transport you will actually have and the buffer you want. A home in the same region is not automatically close to the terminal or walkable. Arzachena includes inland and coastal localities; compare the address, not just the area name, before choosing where to spend your last night.

Settle checkout and luggage storage

Ask the host when the home must be vacated, what tidying is required and whether an authorised luggage option is available after checkout. Do not assume late checkout, luggage storage or permission to stay inside; these are accommodation terms to confirm in writing. If storage is unavailable, plan for the time needed to load everything and keep your bags with you.

Compare the checkout time with the operator’s reporting requirement and the journey to the port. Allow for refuelling, rental-car return, traffic and finding the correct entrance without relying on a standard travel-time estimate. If your group includes children, older travellers or many bags, decide who handles luggage and who drives; removing last-minute handoffs makes the day easier to manage.

Choose a home for the whole stay

Do not choose accommodation only to be closer to the port on the final day. Compare that return journey with the trips you will make during the week, whether you have a car and where your priorities are. Arzachena and Pantogia, near Porto Cervo, are different localities; the homes are not on islands, and distance to a beach or terminal must be checked against the actual address.

If your return sailing uses a different port from your arrival, also plan how to return a hire car or reach it by another means. Do not assume the operator, route or services are the same in both directions. Check access and transport with official port and operator pages for your date. Cost and convenience belong to the full journey, not one leg alone.

Rehearse the departure day

Before confirming, walk through the plan from waking up to boarding: when does the home close, where do the bags go, how will you reach the port, when must you report and what happens if traffic slows the route? Ask the host or operator about any missing answer. A sensible time buffer helps with disruption; an online estimate is not a guarantee of arrival.

Keep the host’s message, booking and travel instructions somewhere the group can access. If you are choosing between an early checkout and another home, compare total cost, luggage storage that is actually confirmed and the effect on the other days. After this rehearsal, you can judge whether the accommodation address and ferry port fit your holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a home near the return port?

Not automatically. Compare the departure-day route with all other trips during the stay and use the accommodation’s exact address. Distance depends on the route and transport you will use, not the locality name alone.

Can I leave luggage after checkout?

Only if the host confirms an arrangement and its terms. Ask before booking; if it is unavailable, plan to keep your luggage with you and allow time to load it and travel to the port.
