Automatic car hire in Olbia: book it as a requirement, not a hope

If an automatic transmission is essential, make it a booking requirement: check that it appears in the offer and written confirmation, then ask what the contract says if that category is unavailable. Do not rely on an upgrade or a verbal request.

Separate a preference from a requirement

For some drivers an automatic is more comfortable; for others it is essential because they cannot or do not know how to drive a manual car. Decide which applies before filtering offers. If it is a requirement, do not book a manual category hoping to receive an automatic at pickup: an unrecorded or unconfirmed preference leaves open the possibility of a different vehicle.

Also consider who will drive. With several drivers, account for each person’s familiarity with the car and check that everyone meets the rental company’s stated requirements. Transmission is only one part of a booking: seats, luggage, pickup arrangements, cover and terms may differ too. Write down the features that are truly necessary before comparing prices, so a cheap but unsuitable offer does not distort the decision.

Check the wording before you pay

On the booking page, look explicitly for “automatic” or the supplier’s equivalent wording. Do not infer it from a vehicle photo, category name or transmission icon unless the label is clear. Save a copy of the offer and read the terms that apply, including the intermediary’s terms if you are booking through a broker.

Before paying, make sure the final confirmation also lists the automatic transmission, rather than only recording it as a note. EU guidance on car hire advises customers to distinguish the rental company from an intermediary and to read the contract information. If anything is unclear, ask which company is responsible for the vehicle and which document controls. Keep the confirmation, terms and written replies together; do not rely on an undocumented phone conversation.

Ask what happens if the car is unavailable

A transmission listed in the confirmation is useful, but read it alongside the rules for unavailable cars and substitutions. Ask the supplier what it will offer if it cannot provide an automatic in the booked category, whether a replacement must meet the same requirement and how you can decline a manual car. Do not assume the desk will provide a free upgrade or keep the same price.

If the answer is unclear, ask for the relevant clause before completing payment. Policies vary between companies and rates; there is no universal rule guaranteeing a refund, upgrade or cost-free cancellation in every case. Your Europe notes that online car hire does not automatically receive the 14-day withdrawal period that applies to some other distance purchases. Check the terms of your specific booking carefully.

Prepare for pickup in Olbia

Olbia Airport publishes contacts and locations for rental operators serving the airport. That list helps identify the supplier, but availability, prices and terms must be checked with the company handling your booking. If the car is essential, contact it with your confirmation number before travel and restate the transmission requirement; an automated email does not necessarily mean that a particular model has been assigned.

At pickup, compare the paperwork with your booking and ask to verify the transmission before signing. If the offered vehicle does not match what was confirmed, point out the difference to staff immediately and keep a record of the conversation. Do not accept a vague statement that it is “the same category” if the key requirement is missing; ask which options follow from the contract and the rate you purchased.

Frequently asked questions

Is writing “automatic” in the booking notes enough?

Do not assume a note is binding. Check that transmission is selected in the offer and shown in the confirmation, then ask in writing how the contract treats it.

Must the company give me an upgrade if no automatic is available?

There is no universal answer; it depends on the booking terms and the supplier’s options. Ask before paying what applies to unavailability and replacement vehicles.

Can I refuse a manual car at pickup?

If an automatic was a confirmed requirement, compare the car and paperwork with the contract and ask the supplier immediately what remedies your rate provides. Do not sign assuming an outcome that is not written.
