Count the days, not just the distance
A visit to Caprera from a mainland base can be planned, but it involves connections and return arrangements. If you have one excursion in mind, keeping your home in Gallura may simplify the rest of the trip; if the archipelago is the focus for several days, compare staying on an island too. Do not decide from a map alone: reaching the port, the crossing, available dates and your return plan are all part of the same choice. Our homes are in Arzachena and Pantogia near Porto Cervo, not on the islands.
Coordinate the ferry and transfers
Before booking, check current ferry information and how you will reach the departure port and then Caprera. Confirm availability, terms and schedules with the operators; old timetables and generic journey estimates are not enough. If travelling with a vehicle, check which rules and reservations apply to your circumstances. Compare the total cost of each option, including every necessary leg and service, using like-for-like quotes; one choice is not always cheaper for everyone. Allow for changes and do not plan your return around a connection that has not been confirmed.
More visits do not mean unrestricted access
La Maddalena National Park protects areas with different rules. Before choosing a beach or trail, consult current official notices and regulations. Access to Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina is regulated under the procedures set by the Park; do not describe them as freely accessible coves. Nibani, Soffi and Mortorio are integral protection zones: do not suggest landing, swimming or independent itineraries there. Rules can apply both on shore and at sea, so check the specific activity you intend to do.
Choose a base for the routine you want
For one excursion, ask how much you want to change accommodation and whether the rest of the holiday will focus on mainland Gallura. For several days, consider how many port departures you expect and whether reducing daily transfers matters. Places in the municipality of Arzachena are not interchangeable: the inland town, coastal localities and Pantogia near Porto Cervo have different positions and access. Request the exact address and map the routes you will use; do not infer proximity to a port or beach from a broad area label in an advert.
Keep the plan flexible
For each archipelago day, note the activity, permitted access, connection, any required booking and an alternative if restrictions or conditions make the plan unsuitable. Recheck Park information shortly before your visit and follow official updates. A fire reported on Santa Maria in September 2026 makes it especially important not to promise landings or open trails without current confirmation. If your plan depends on a regulated activity, clarify requirements with the relevant authorities or authorised operators before selecting accommodation and transport. A backup keeps one attraction from controlling the whole stay.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay on the mainland to visit Caprera?
For one day trip, it is an option to compare, allowing for transfers and the return journey. If you want several days in the archipelago, also consider island accommodation. The right choice depends on your full plan, confirmed connections and the conditions for your activities.
Can I freely plan a visit to Cala Coticcio or Mortorio?
Do not assume free access. Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina are regulated by the Park; Nibani, Soffi and Mortorio are integral protection zones where independent landings, swimming or itineraries should not be planned. Check current official rules.
